The Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) is a year-long enrichment program designed to recruit, stimulate, improve and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students.

Over the past two years, the Greater Harrisburg Chapter of the NAACP’s ACTSO program was fortunate to be awarded enough grant money to give $500 to all Gold Medal winners, and an extra $500 to Gold Medal winners who were also seniors. Unfortunately, this year some of the grant monies that the NAACP Chapter expected to receive was not awarded to us. In fact, we were not notified until Wednesday, May 7th, three days before the ACTSO Awards Ceremony, that we would not receive any funding from one of our largest “expected” grants.
This year we will not be able to give scholarship monies to our Gold Medal winners. Our entire focus is to raise funds to afford sending our Gold medalist to the national competition in Charlotte, North Carolina. Our expenses for this years local ACTSO competition and the Awards Ceremony totaled a little over $3000. In order to take our students to the national competition, we will need to cover the cost of transportation, hotel rooms (4 nights) for students and chaperons, registration fees for students and chaperons, and meal stipends for students and chaperons. For more than 25 years, the Harrisburg NAACP Chapter has supported our students attending the national ACTSO Competition with no cost to the students and their families. This year will be no exception. We will continue to fundraise to support our deserving Gold Medalist to attend the 2025 National ACTSO Competition, and to support the local ACTSO program in 2025 – 26.
